So, It is not the groaning of low fluid (it’s full). When the engine runs, the PS pulley squeaks. Sometimes at idle, sometimes when revving. PS works just fine lock to lock. No notable RPM drop or anything. ALSO – it seems the chillier it gets, the more likely it is to squeak.

The belt felt pretty tight so I backed tension off a bit, sprayed a little WD-40 lithium grease into the shaft best I could from the outside (which helped for like two days).

Now what I need to know is – what are my options for fixing this? It doesn’t look like replacing it will be difficult at all but at $150 or more for even a stupid rebuilt, I would like to know what I can do to maybe salvage this one. Would hate to drop 150 and then find out, “You could have fixed the bearing for $2”

If it gets too bad, is it one of those things where it would cease up, blow up, or something really stupid? OR will it just annoy the hell out of me until I can do something?
Reason I worry about cease-up is I had an alternator that did that on some cavalier.

EDIT – Also I pulled the belt and messed with the pulley, it seems to have about 1/1,000 inch of “play” moving in and out. Cannot really measure but that is a guesstimation. When I spin it by hand it moves freely but if I try to spin it fast by hand, it is like something “grabs” and slows it down but still smooth turning. Like maybe the fluid pressure kicks in or whatever.

Flush the system and use Honda/Acura Power Steering Fluid.

If flushing doesn’t fix it, you might try pick n pull. The salvage yard would be a lot less than $150.00

It is not groaning. I DO plan on flushing the fluid “just because” though.
It is more of a pulley squeak. Shot it with a bit more silicone grease and it is quiet again for now. At least til 5:30 tomorrow morning, on my way to work, when I am not in the mood for car hassles.

The only thing about junkyards is that the PS pump (and too many other parts) seem proprietary to the gen 1 Acura CL. And unfortunately, they are hard to come by in junk yards. Or maybe -fortunately- from the stand point of “They must not mess up often enough to trash”
