Make a long story short I have a whine in my power steering oil pump. I would like to buy an oil pressure gauge to see if it’s a bad pump or a bad gear.

The pressure is supposed to be at 1180–1266 psi’s. Is there anyplace they sell these?

    Thanks

On these cars they illustrate a pressure test. The gauge is carefully installed between the HPPS hose and the HPPS line into the gear.
The gauge has a valve on it and if the pressure is not within range you shut the valve off to see if it builds up enough.
If the pressure is too high is a bad FCV
if it’s too low it’s a bad gear
if it’s too low after valve shut off it’s a bad pump.

Is there another way to tell if your pump is bad without this? I’m not seeing this available at the big tool warehouses.
      Thanks

If it’s noise, check the fluid condition. If it has visible air bubbles, appears frothy, or is pink (in most cases) it’s usually a pump issue. Really though, you have to go through the procedure and make sure there are no leaks anywhere. A small leak can result in air being introduced to the system and making noise. Again, it’s generally the pump in my experience but other places can cause it too. There’s one Ford Pump design that just makes noise. Rebuilt units come with a big orange sticker on them saying the pump design is noisy.

Worn or failed strut mounts (bearings) can also cause difficulty steering.
