So this is another thing going bad on this car, when I first got it I heard a slight whining I knew there was something up with the power steering but it didnt seem that bad at first. Months later I noticed fluid dripping down from where the pinion is right where the steering wheel meets the rack. I have been refilling this thing often in the meantime, then I noticed one day it was leaking worse like a stream past the tie rod rubber boot clamp. The boot wasn’t torn it was just pushing past the ring/zip tie that holds the boot in place. Why is it leaking so bad, does the steering rack just need to be replaced? The pump from and the lines are not leaking from what I can see. I have read the causes of power steering leaks on this site but it still doesn’t explain the exact problem that’s going on with mine. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What would contribute to the rack leaking would be fluid being in there for a long time
        and becoming dirty/abrasive.

So would u just replace the rack or the rack and pump? I mean like why is it leaking in 2 different places on the rack, is there something up with the pressure or something?

There’s a few o-rings in the pinion that keeps the fluid contained. College might have been suggesting that the debris eventually tore those seals that lead to your leakage but don’t be quick to replace the unit. Let it drain as you continue to refill and then introduce some stop-leak fluid to save the leak in the long run. I used a couple small stop leak bottles until my power steering stopped leaking. It was almost pouring out at one point. Here’s my recommendation if they still sell this (pic attached). It’ll probably take a couple refills to swell the rings but for me at least, it’s worked for just over 60k miles. Kinda scary to approach it this way, but if it works, it works. Maybe it will or won’t work for you but good luck!

U know, I forgot to mention I did try 2 or 3 bottles of that Lucas power steering stop leak stuff, thicker fluid. That did not help. Im just going to replace this thing now. Its been too long of constantly refilling and i noticed the colder it is outside it didnt leak as bad, but on days where its warm it pours out almost like u said urs did. But thanks for the reply though

Once the rack leaks its done. You don’t have to do the pump if its not leaking
or noisy. Definitely flush and use the correct fluid.
