During MN’s intense winter I lost Power Steering. I added Non-Honda (but “Honda/Asian”) power steering fluid. I got Power Steering back for a short time. I noticed it was all over the top of the reservoir and below it. I looked up some stuff and heard that there is the O-Ring that needs to be replaced. (The one that attaches to the front hose connector and to the bottom of the reservoir).

So I replaced the O-Ring and put in 2.5-3 bottles of Honda PS Fluid (Straight from the Honda Dealer). Then bled it.

It still bubbled up. I also noticed smoke from behind the motor. Where the high pressure hose leads? The noise went away (except when the wheel is all the way to the left or right) since then but the steering is difficult (but not pulling a mule against its will, uphill. Now it is between pulling a mule against its will *not uphill* and maybe a 50lb weight.) It is also easier to turn with higher speeds.

So I decided that instead of trying to rebuild the PS Pump like in your video…I decided to replace the pump. I put the pump in and replaced the liquid (another 3 bottles) and I bled it…It felt mostly fixed but it still bubbled AND the smoke from the back. I don’t want to spend $$ on PS Fluid to try to troubleshoot the leak.

IF I put more liquid in, what should be the process to find the leak and does this sound like more than a hose?

The high pressure line (and return line) go to the steering rack. You need to check there to see if you have a more serious leak. You will not see smoke from the tail pipe however if the leak is falling on the exhaust system it will smoke. You may have to clean everything off with a degreaser in order to ID where it is coming from. Finally, if you do have a leak on the steering rack I would recommend you have the unit replaced. Overhauling a steering rack is not a simple job. One last note, when you are working on the steering system it is very important you keep everything clean and no dirt gets into the hydraulic system.
