Okay so I have a brand new pump, and a brand new pulley on the bracket for this 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0 L OHV non flex fuel V6

I’ve boiled the damn thing, torched it, 1/2 inch impact, lubed it, used the biggest breaker bars I can find…..
I end up breaking the the tool before getting the pump pulley on.
The advanced auto tool crushed the bolt.
The gipe tool broke in half.
The OTC tool looks like a squiggly line……
I’ve bought a 2nd pulley because I was thinking maybe it is wrong….

I’m pretty sure they gave me the wrong pump but it bolts up to the bracket fine…
I can’t find anything on the part number and unless I can prove they gave me the wrong part I’m shit out of luck.

I even thought hey I might be doing this simple looking task wrong….so I watch a few videos and read an article about it….sane thing I’m doing….
      Part # e8dc-3a578-ba

      I’m mostly just ranting….

        It was the right part.
        Apparently I’m an idiot.
It’s finally on there though lol

So for the people taking notes at home, what went wrong?

I have replaced that pump on that car and it may be my least-favorite job under the hood so far.

For one, I believe that is one of those Ford pumps that use a different threading that most generic pulley remover/installer tools don’t quite fit.

I didn’t have this for that job, but I like to mix up some ATF and penetrating oil to clean both parts; the slightest hint of dirt and it won’t want to move in either direction.

I bought a cheap tool for that style of pulley once. And used it once.

Then I ordered a Blue Point one from my Snap-On guy. I must have used it a hundred times by now without issue.

I ended up buying and expensive tool to do this and still had issues.
I actually gave up and did what everyone told me not to do.

I whacked the pulley one good time with a hammer and it slipped right on.

Got the car back together and was just at the point that I was going to have a mechanic replace the entire pump and pulley again since I was pretty sure I just ruined the gears inside.

Started it up, power steering runs quiet, no problems so I lucked out.

I couldn’t tell you what in the world I was doing wrong but the darn thing slipped on easily with a wack of the hammer so I know it fits.

So I’m still a clueless idiot unfortunately.

This has been one of the more frustrating things I’ve done on any car. Usually if it is really difficult and nothing is working, I can break down and buy a good quality special tool and everything great.

I ended up even trying to make my own pulley installer with a bolt, some washers and a big nut.
I went to fastanel and for the hardest ones they could give me.
I ended up breaking that off in the pump and had to weld it back together just to get it out.
