power steering

I replaced my power steering pump with a reman, and bled the system a few times…turning the wheel lock to lock…for about 15 min…at low speed turns, like into a parking spot it is hard to turn, like I have no power assist…at highway speeds or routine driving its fine…am I missing something? :huh:

check your lines make sure they arent loose cross threaded or leaking. check the fluid level you still might have air in the lines. might also be a faulty reman pump too.

I would also compare the old one (if you still have it) to the new for the pulleys. Sometimes it’s necessary to transfer as perhaps the pulley size isn’t the same, in this case the reman unit might have a larger diameter one, reducing it’s ability at lower RPMs.

I checked all the lines, no leaks…as for air in the system…its a possibility…the pump whines with speed acceleration…not loud, but you hear it…I think you guys are right, might be a faulty reman… I checked the pumps before I installed the reman…I had to transfer the pressure sensor (screws into pump) and a hose fitting…also the pully…I am leaning towards a bad part…but wanted other opinions….Thanks for the responses!!!

I am going to go out on a limb and ask that you did use the correct power steering fluid and have it set at the right level?

I would also check the power steering bellows.

Just an update… I put in a new pump from hyundai and it works flawlessly… The reman was no good… Thanks to all who helped!!

im glad you fixed it. it doesnt happen often but on occasion reman parts arent any good. ive had severe bad luck with napa parts, but i think thats mostly cheap pricks that buy something, put it on their car clean up the old one and take it back saying they didnt need it.

Thanks for posting your fix. Just for future reference it’s normal if you have a power steering problem for it to only be present at low speeds. As you go faster you WANT the power assist to go away and by design most vehicles do this. I’d also like to say that it’s not normally the pump that is at fault when you have a lack of assist as the pump really just creates a volume of power steering fluid, it’s up to the rack or steering box to regulate the pressure and provide the assist. In short when you have a power steering assist problem the pump should not be your first suspect but rather the last in my experience. Glad you got it sorted out and thanks for using the ETCG forum.

I am working on a 04 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD 2.7 with 114K. It came home on a flat bed after the owners ex hid it from him for over a year with a frozen RR wheel, leaking power steering return line. and a buzzing pump that changed pitch with engine speed. I fabricated a new line, added new fluid, and ran the wheel stop to stop 12 times. I do not know if this car was driven without fluid any length of time, or if the line just rusted while sitting. Anyway the pump still buzzed and it is jerky to steer. I replaced the pump with a reman from Auto Zone and still had the same problem. Looking into the fluid cup it appears to have good circulation, and there was no foam. Could sitting so long cause a restriction in the pressure line, similar to a brake hose holding a caliper to the rotor, or could the rack have gone bad? Auto Zone took the pump back and I realy don’t want to just swap out parts hoping I get lucky. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jim
