Power Probe 1, 2, or 3???

I’m wanting to surprise my husband with a Power Probe. He has the Power Probe Screamer and doesn’t care for it much. Says it’s pretty much just a test light. I wanted to get him a good one, but not knowing much about tools, cars, etc., I have no idea what I’m looking at and what the real differences are.

Other than price, is there a big difference between a Power Probe 1 and Power Probe 3? He’s a diesel mechanic and would be using it at work as well as at home on our vehicles and any side work they may come along.

I checked out the website and for me, I wouldn’t be interested anything less than the power probe 3 as that has a display, allows you to inject power, and has pulse detection, which I think could be useful for troubleshooting some sensors. Some sensors put out 45-90 microsecond pulses instead of a square wave and it looks the the power probe 3 could detect that.

But I would think getting a good Fluke DMM would be a priority before getting a power probe.

hi I have had the power probe 3 and now have the hook both are good bits of gear and are for the diy user just about the same apart from the power supply mode as the hook can supply up to 100amps inrush for testing motors and the like and the 3 can only supply 60 and the hook has the new smart tip that can automatically switch between test types they are good but a good but are no replacement for a good multi meter like a fluke 170 or the like
