The car: 2001 civic DX 5spd MT.

With the car in Neutral the engine sounds perfect. No noise at all. There is though from the passenger side a noise… kinda like a noise you get when you spin a bearing that is worn and dry. If I push in the clutch pedal the noise disappears. I also get the same noise while I am driving the car. And when I disengage the clutch ( pedal in ) the noise goes away.

I would suggest the throw out bearing. what ever the noise the trans has to come out.C8-)

But the TOB only comes into play when you step on the clutch pedal – and that’s when he says the noise disappears. Whatever it is stops when the input shaft stops turning – so it may be an input shaft, or some other internal bearing.

I agree, the only way to find out what’s going on is to pull the transmission.

That was what I was also thinking Johnzcarz.

Thank you both.. I guess its coming out whether I like it or not. Good time then to change the clutch while I am in there then.. its orig with 215000kms on it.

I would say throw out bearing is bad also. That bearing is getting so loose the wind is practically spinning it. I have seen several do the same thing by quieting the noise when pushing in clutch.
The growl under load you are talking about could be just a W.A.G.!

                  Fader,

That sounds like the exact problem I was having. The noise was only there when the transmission was spinning(clutch engaged), in nuetral, 1st, 2nd, etc.

It was my input shaft bearing, I popped the old one out and it was pretty much gone.

                  Good luck to you!

I would look at the input shaft bearing also. Good luck and keep us posted.

I will. Um mq1991… was it hard to remove the bearing? just a puller to get it out?

Thanks again.. very helpful to know someone had similar problem. Gives me a more definite decision to take out the trans. Its pretty much the only thing I have never touched in a car. So it will be a learning experience 🙂 .

I agree that it sounds like an input shaft bearing to a point, normally they will also make noise when in neutral and the clutch engaged. These bearings go bad from time to time but I’d like to point out that it’s very important that you only use Honda fluid in that transmission as it does make a difference in the life of the internals of the transmission and in how the transmission performs.
