My 2000 corolla automatic has about 48k miles (bought it used about 2 weeks ago). I did a Transmission drain and fill (Royal Purple Max ATF) once (I know you’re supposed to do it 3x times for a complete drain)…the color of the old fluid was red.

When accelerating, around 10mph it will switch gears to 2nd gear. When it switches to 2nd gear, there is a slight jerk,
Around 20mph, it will switch to 3rd gear…again, there is a slight jerk.

The higher gear switches are smooth and not noticeable (eg 3rd to 4th). It appears only to happen at the low gears (1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd).

It doesn’t feel like hesitation or the gear struggling to engage. It’s more of like you feel the gear “roll and engage” and a sudden surge of power is now available. Sometimes, it’s not even noticeable, like if I floor the pedal..you cannot feel it switch from 1st to 2nd. I’m in a lot of stop and go traffic, so you can definitely feel the 1st to 2nd gear.

Is something I should be worried about? Is there something simple to try and fix or diagnose the problem? Could motor mounts cause this issue?

Did it shift that way before you replaced the fluid? If it shifted that way before i don’t think there is anything to worry about. If it started after the fluid change i would replace it with the Toyota recommended fluid. 3 times.

          WYSETECH asked the perfect question.

Toyota is extremely specific for the fluid it uses and it usually can not be found at a parts store – can only get it from the dealer.

Make sure your level is correct. I’ve noticed that in my Sienna, if the ATF level is just a little off I get rough shifting.

It shifted like that before I changed the ATF. I used Royal Purple because it’s the best and it says that it supports Dextron II (which is what I think my corolla transmission is).

The mechanic put in about 4.2 quarts (Toyota says the capacity is 3.2quarts). He first put in 2 quarts, started the engine, and saw it wasn’t enough and added another quart….wasn’t enough…and the final number was 4.2 quarts.
