I have a 97 Explorer 4.0 rear wheel drive with 287,500 miles on it and I seem to be having a throttle cable issue of some kind. When I accelerate into passing gear, there is little response from the engine; it no longer downshifts and accelerates quickly, it just slowly increases speed. I had my son get in the vehicle and push the pedal to the floor (not running) and found that if I manually pulled the throttle forward, it had about another 3/8’s” or so of travel. I looked at the pedal where the cable attaches and noticed that there was a crimped-on stop that seemed to be pulled out out of the cable casing and the pedal had about 3/8″ free play before engaging the cable. I didn’t see any adjustment for the cable, so I’m thinking I may need to replace it. Does this sound like I’m on the right track or is there some repair or fix I can make to the cable? Thanks for suggestions in advance!

I forgot to add in my previous post that I don’t have any idle issues concerning the cable, the engine idles at about 1200 rpm when cold and then runs about 850 – 900 rpm when warmed up. I haven’t noticed a lag when accelerating from a stop.

I think, you have fuel or air supply issue, or both.
Does not take that much of throttle plate engagement to accelerate.

Thanks for the response. I did some further looking online and found a YouTube video referring to my problem and found a repair for the cable stretch…putting a zip tie around the end of the cable at the accelerator pedal to take up the slack in the cable. Vehicle runs fine and has the passing gear back! Here’s the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccsT_pVONQE
