      G’day all,

I have a 1995 Toyota Camry with just over 175,000 km. I’ve been recently hearing a slight whirring noise that seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. The noise occurs when travelling at around 60 kph, I can especially hear it when it is raining. I’ve jacked both rear sides of the vehicle up and inspected both rear wheel hubs, when I spin both hubs by hand I can hear what sounds like little ticking sounds coming from them. Also the left-hand rear side hub seems to be emitting grease as I can see fresh looking grease on the outside of the hub.

      What do you guys think?

        G’day to you too…

Probably got something there… Replace the rear hubs…. Cheap and easy on those models…

A bad bearing starts off as a merely annoying noise and moves to a roar…

        Keep us posted…

If I replace the bearings, should I replace the entire hub assembly or could I just replace the actual bearing itself? How hard would it be to change the bearings without a bearing press or puller?

Much depends on your comfort level and available tools.

Suggest picking up a Haynes or Chilton’s guide for the car/truck in question. That will have more detailed information. (including torque specs…you really want that nut set correctly)

The other factor is which parts are available. Sometimes you can get a hub/bearing unit that is reasonable, when compared to just doing the bearing…and having to fight with getting the old parts on/off…etc.. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. I’ve done bearings on cars as well. Always interested in seeing/hearing how other members tackle these issues.

            S-
