Hi, I am looking to buy my first car late February of next year and I came across this gem. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/3331277844.html

Its a Geo Prizm GSi hatchback. Essentially I call it an AE86 just in a FWD version. I am wondering what other gear heads would think of this car. Any good, any recommendation’s for a beginner, if not this car, what car should I get that’s preferably Japanese in a FR layout and fuel injected?

P.S. I want something fuel injected so I can learn how to tune EFI cars. Basically get a head start on what I will eventually be learning in school.

If your goal is to work on your own and you have a local u-pull-it or pull-a-part or similar source for parts check to see which cars you like that are plentiful in those places. You’ll get lots of experience on the cheap.

IMO, Toyota Corolla’s are one of the best bang for your buck cars out there. Fuel efficient, cheaper to repair, easy to find parts, easy to work on, they’re great cars.

Yea that Geo I would love to own, but it looks like the owner has already sold it. So I am still looking for my first car; still in that stage till about February of next year were I think I am more in the buying/test driving stage. I made up my mind that it must be a 90’s Toyota Corolla, has to be a stick shift, if it has ac, prefer it to be after 96, and its not a necessity, but would like a aftermarket deck, but can install one my self if it comes with stock. I would love an FR layout, but FF is fine for now as its my first car and I just need driving experience.

I would say get a Honda Civic, CRX, Prelude (avoid the automatic versions). They are pretty easy to work on. I’ve worked on my Prelude with not much experienced, but had help with other Prelude owners and the service manual.

Honda’s and Toyota’s are not too dificult to work on. My 1996 Geo prizm was easier to maintain than my 1999 civic. Everything was just more easily accessible.

yea, I am sticking to Toyota Corolla. I have watched a few video’s on YouTube of the corolla and like the styling. The Geo prizm is just a re-badged corolla.

I would find a 6th Generation Civic. I’m driving one right now and I absolutely adore this car. The handling with those double wishbones is incomparable to any fwd box out there.

yea, I took a look at that on google with pics…not really feeling it. I like the toyota corolla.

I would have to say my Prelude has really good handle. Especially winding roads going 60-70mph and car still grips with no roll (factory btw).

Camry has a similar design, come with a 5-speed as well, and with a bigger engine than corolla. I think corolla has 1.8 max and Camry can come with 3.0L V6. But only DX/CE models are manual.

I heard that the prelude are awesome cars, but If you have one of those manual trans break they are hard to find. True? IDK.
