Possible bad MAP sensor

I’ll try to keep this short. 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, 2.2 OHV engine, vin code is 4 (For parts). Recently, my car started idling really roughly, as if it was a standard and I let the clutch off to fast and it was stuttering, something like that. Anyway.. it’ll stutter at idle, up to temp, after about 20 mins of driving. Also, when I gas it, at first, it takes about 5 seconds to get to like 30 MPH, then out of nowhere, it’ll gain 10X the power and get from 30-60 in about 2-3 seconds…. it NEVER did this before, and it concerns me, I thought it was an evap valve going bad, but I took it to a friend who specializes in exaust and intake, and he said it was my MAP Sensor… so I did research and found this article.. http://fixcars.net/map-sensor-symptoms and everything it says is a symptom, my car is doing! I don’t want to have to replace the MAP unless I’m SURE it’s the problem! Anyone know for sure if what I have described is the MAP sensor?? It’s giving a check engine light for evap emissions, and it randomly gives me a HUGE burst of power at 30 MPH as said before. Any suggestions are awesome, and I Appreciate it! (So much for short….)

Your vehicle may or may not be able yo run with MAP sensor disconnected but try disconnecting your sensor and letting it run if it doesn’t change anything then you’ve got a bad MAP. By disconnecting the sensor the computer in some vehicles have a fail safe to go back to basic tuning if it is getting absolutely no response from the sensor, other vehicle have a fail safe where they just won’t run at all without the MAP plugged in. Hope that helps

It’s not a good idea to start your diagnosis with an assumption like that. Given that it’s running that poorly, I’d wager you have a check engine light on. If that’s the case, the first step would be to pull the codes as that would be your most important clue as to what the issue is. Once you have the code, you can begin your diagnosis from there.
