I’ve always worked with lifts that were bolted to the ground. I,m thinking of getting a portable scissor lift that’s not. Has anyone used them? How stable are they? Will I tip the whole thing over the moment I turn a bolt? Just looking at the pics online makes it seem like a bad idea.

They are fairly safe, like anything else, when used properly…. They just may limit you on space and what you can do under a vehicle…

Personally, I am looking at the MAXJAX for a relatively inexpensive, safe and portable solution in a low ceiling environment… Sets up in a few minutes and can be moved and stored out of the way… Since you can install it yourself, you save on any installation fees and this sells for around $2199 US so it does not seem to be too bad of a deal to me…

          Well, I have a 7 000 lbs scissor lift.

And have it for 2 years. I still do not trust that thing and it’s bolted to the slab. But it gives you excellent access to entire car center line and everything up to the lift platforms. So transmission and engine jobs are very accessible.
Thing wobbles side to side very easy.
What Karl says is awright except that you can not move those lifts to any point you want to. They are still mounted on slab anchors. After use – dismounted and rolled away.
There is a much better lift – I had my sights on it for quite a while – that can be rolled anywhere you want to. I didn’t buy it as it was too tall for my garage.

Thanks for the Maxjax link, I’ve never heard of them before.
