po741 ??

2005 pontiac Vibe front wheel drive. car runs great but once in a while I get Po 741 which is Torque converter Clutch circuit Performance ? stuck off…does this mean I need a new tranny?? Thanks for all you help guys

The computer is looking to see the drop in rpm when the convertor clutch engages. If this doesn’t happen it sets the code. Probably a stuck valve but it could be the convertor clutch wearing out. Then the convertor clutch material circulating in the transmission could cause a stuck valve. So, it is kind of a downward spiral.

I’d say start setting aside money for a transmission rebuild or replacement.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you need a new transmission. It just means the torque converter may not be locking up like it should. Here’s how a torque converter works.

That said, there are a number of things that can cause a converter not to lock up properly outside of a failed converter. Also, considering you need to remove the transmission to replace it, it’s an opportune time to consider replacing the transmission or having it rebuilt to prevent future issues. Just depends on what kind of shape it’s in. More info here.
