I rebuilt a 360 mopar for my truck and finally got it in and fired it up and as soon as I did it instantly started to make a rattle. Now I was terrified that my hard work was just going away but then I got to thinking. Is it possible that the brand new hydraulic lifters are tapping. It’s not a fast tap it’s a steady one. I’m praying that it isn’t rod knock. I need some advice. Thanks.
Also. I pulled the valve covers and checked the torque on the rocker arms and it it’s correct but I can still push down on the lifters and compress them. So I’m hoping that they just haven’t pumped up yet. How long would it take? It’s pretty darn loud

My suggestion would have been to primed the engine.
With the distributor removed insert a mating oil pump shaft and spin the pump with a drill to pressurize the oil system.
        In your situation though:
I would hope you did soak all the lifters in an oil bath prior to installation.
Used assembly lube where needed / recommended on all surfaces.
Also your using the correct break in oil recommended.
I would consider following the first suggestion and remove the distributor and prime the system.

I primed the engine prior to starting it. There is plenty of oil pressure. I used plenty of assembly lube on the bearings and cam and lifters and such. I didn’t soak the lifters. I just coated them with assembly lube because I was told that they will pump themselves up. When i removed the valve cover I could push down on a couple push rods still and compress the piston. I’m assuming that means that the lifter hasn’t pumped up yet. And I’m hoping that that is the source of the sound.

Well now you’ve learned one lesson.
I do hope for your sake they recover quickly.

So I’m safe to assume it’s probably not rod knock

Rod knock, piston slap vs. valve train clatter usually have somewhat distinct sounds.
You can find many examples as to what each sounds like on you tube.
As to which you are experiencing …..
No clue, the engine is not here for me or anyone else to listen to in order to make any type of conclusion.
