I am new to the DIY maintenance thing. I did my first brake job about four weeks ago on my wife’s 2003 Toyota RAV4. I bought these pads & rotors:

I installed with anti-seize (based on advice on ChrisFix video) on the back of the pads and where they contact the clips. Pretty soon I developed some pretty nasty brake squeal when applying brakes in the 0-5 mph range, and particularly while turning. There’s also a bit of a squeak anytime you come off the brakes.

I disassembled everything, cleaned everything out, re-applied anti-seize, to no avail.

My next step was to remove the shims that come with the pads, and apply the red CRC Disc Brake Quiet everywhere. I applied as directed, but it did nothing to the squeal.

I am really not sure what next steps are, besides replacing the pads. Marital bliss is at stake, as my wife cannot stand the squeal.

By the way, does it matter which pad I install on the inboard vs outboard side? I wasn’t aware there was a difference, and I just installed however it fit. Could this contribute to squeal?

Did you bed the brakes? the inner and outer pads should match the ones you took off It’s usually pretty hard to get them on wrong.

I did not bed the brakes. I just disassembled everything again. I did have an inner and outer wrong.

Then I bedded the brakes. I made about 8 hard stops from 60 mph down to 10-20 mph. So far so good (no squealing). We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

Bedding seems to have improved things, but still got a little squeal. Again, it is particularly easy to replicate if I am braking+turning at 0-5 mph. I figured out that the little bit of squeak when I let off the brakes is actually the rear drums.

Should I try to bed again? What about sanding down the pads and/or rotors a bit?

I wouldn’t recommend sanding on the pads who knows what they are made of and what health risk could be associated with breathing that dust.
A couple of things to check come to mind. Brake clips are lightly touching the rotor. The paint on the sides of the pads is thick rubbing the rotor or a contaminated pad. Did you use a semi metallic or a ceramic pad? If you used a semi metallic pas they are noisier than the ceramic.

As far as the location of the pads go the pad with the wear indicator should go on the inside.

I don’t think they are ceramic since the Amazon description does not say they are.

I just checked your link-you bought Non-Asbestos Organic (NAO) pads. Ceramics are much quieter.

Thanks. If I go the route of changing the pads, any advice on a brand and product line? What retailer has good pricing and selection?
