Hello Eric and other fellow forum members. I have a very unusual oil leak that seems to be behind and under the intake manifold on the passenger side. I cant really tell where its coming from. behind that coolant hose under the head. its a b18c installed in my civic hatch. anyone ever come across a leak like this before?

Are you 100% sure it’s not coming from the valve cover?

I’m not 100% sure but I’m pretty sure the leak isn’t coming from the valve cover gasket. I will check for sure tommorrow though.

Ok I just checked and there is no leak from the valve cover. Any other ideas?

Hard to see the line you are refering to in the photo. is this line a metal line about the size of a metal brake line ? if so it is probably an oil bypass line. I have seen them develope small holes .

You can’t see the line because its directly behind the coolant line so u can’t see where it is connected to the head, but you can see part of it coming up to where it hooks up on the other end by the fuel rail

so this line runs from a point on the head to the end of the fuel rail ? if it is formed steel line with a banjo style fitting at each end it is probably an oil bypass. could be leaking from either one of the the ends where the bolt passes through the banjo fitting or from a small hole or crack in the line its self.

Its this line here indicated by the red arrows. The other end of it, that you cant see because its behind that coolant hose, is directly above that little puddle of oil.

This is probably an obvious question, but if there was a leak in the intake manifold gasket, would oil come from it? That is, are there any oil passages that the IM seals off?

And I checked my PCV valve and its good.

I don’t believe there are any oil passages in the IM . if you have a small inspection mirror check the underside off the rubber hose running down from the steel line for damage. you may have to remove the rubber line for further inspection if you can’t see anything with a mirror. question- does that line run to the pcv valve ? if so perhaps you are getting oil blow by from the valve and then if there is a leak in the rubber line it could drip from there. question- does your car have any symptoms of a vacuum leak ?

I had a 1.6 vtec dohc 1992 Had a limiter in it and an oil leak cumming from the top of the gear box thats where the limiter was running off powerstearing fluid my

mechanic tried to fix it but made it worse……… He wasnt a very good mechancic but this might give you sum idea.

I’ve seen this a lot actually and I think it IS or WAS the valve cover. The line you point to in the pics is one of the the coolant lines for the IAC valve. There really is nothing in the intake that has pressurized oil in it or anything near that area for that matter. What you may be seeing is a former leak that pooled up in that area. Oil will not evaporate as coolant will so it tends to stick around a while so even after you ‘fix’ a leak the oil may still be hanging out in that area. I would recommend you clean the area with cleaner and compressed air and then see how long it takes for the ‘leak’ to come back if it does at all.
