        If you want to do this correctly, you would need to remove the head and use a product you pace on top on the pistons, reinstall the head, timing belt/chain and rotate the crank by hand from TDC twice, then check for imprints in the molding using a vernier gage and compare to factory specs. Its a lot of work.

        If its an interference engine, i would be more concerned with piston head damage.

          Dreamer nailed it, this is the only way to check the clearance and it IS labor intensive and you will also need a spare set of head gaskets because you have to properly torque the heads down to get the measurement correct and doing so will ‘damage’ the head gasket so it will need to be replaced after you take the measurement.
