So I am rebuilding my first engine, when i pulled the pistons I noticed I nicked below the oil ring of the piston. Its very small but my question is will this affect the functionality? And if I replace it do i have to replace all four or should I just replace all anyhow. I wanted to re-ring the pistons if possible, let me know what you guys think and thanks in advance.

Cosmetic. If you have metal sticking out beyond the original surface of the piston I’d clean that up.

with barneyb on this one, that looks just fine, throw some new rings on her, give her a little polish in that area, the thing you need to be concerned about is heavy wear cracks and chips, that little nick is nothing, it should be fine just make sure there is nothing sticking out 🙂

Thanks for the responses, my next question is I do not have a press (i dont have the money or space right now for a HF press), and this is a slight budget build. So, do I need to put in new wrist pins? Also how do I know if I do need wrist pins i.e looseness, stiffness…any help will do. Thanks.

If on a tight budget the public library is your friend. Find a good book on engine building, there should be some. Spend an evening reading and all your questions will be answered.

When I was a young man I found “How to Fix Your Chevy” at the library and proceeded to make the pages greasy. The engine I had as parts ran and took me off to college.

Thanks, I actually have a chevy and honda rebuild vids, and I have a Haynes and the 92-95 civic manual from honda. I have gone to the library and found only how to identify if their bad when inside the engine, meaning sounds (knocks) and other stuff. This engine was a JY engine if you will and I have no past history on it and I cannot find on how to tell while out the block. I have googled, thought I have found stuff but not really. I’ll keep digging for now. Thanks again.

You knock out the pin, check the bore size and the pin size to see if they are in tolerance. Check that the oiling hole from the bottom ring land is not plugged and reassemble. You need a press for this.
