i have a 2004 GTO and im getting a noise from a stop. it sounds as if its coming from the rear passenger side. it sound like a BRRRRRR!! last a second or two. my service manual suggest that the pinion seal could be bad to cause such a noise. any input would help. again the only time it happens is from take off, any speed, but almost always.
      thx john

ita a Pontiac muscle car, rear wheel drive. the axles seem to be secure and no signs of wear to any parts from the rear end. fluid is full.

            Pinion Bearing Noise
Pinion bearing failures can be distinguished because pinion bearings rotate at a higher rate of speed than the differential side bearings or drive axles. Rough or excessively worn pinion bearings produce a continuous low pitched whirring or scraping noise on low speed acceleration from a stop
this comes out of my online service manual
            thx john

It could be most anything, from dragging brakes, or a wheel bearing, or even what you indicated. No way we can tell from here just from the sound description. The only way to tell is to jack up one back wheel off the ground and spin it by hand, or with the engine, to see if it is on that side, then you start taking that side apart to find rust or corrosion or wear or bad bearings. One step at a time.

If a pinion bearing it should make the most noise on deceleration but make noise all of the time. I’ve heard the rear differentials in these cars are problem prone with side bearings getting loose and taking out the works. Anyway, I suggest if you do identify the noise source as being the differential then get it rebuilt right away.

good day we had a lot of problems with this rear diffrental the side bearing adjuster would break and the side bearing adjuster would turn and change the backlash. the adjusters are on the left and right side of the diffrental housing where the axles go in look and see if the retainers are broken.hope this helps. jerry

Yeah….I did a little more research. Not many rear wheel drive Pontiacs in Canada.

Your car could have a seized universal joint that would make noise under acceleration but usually that would cause a vibration around 50 MPH or 80 kmh.

It could be caused by something worn or dragging in the brakes.

Like Bill and Greg said I would start with brakes and than check the wheel bearings.

A bad wheel bearing is much more likely than a bad pinion bearing, GM axles where known for rear wheel bearing issues where the axle shaft develops hairline cracks where the roller bearings ride.

The pinion is in the center of the differential, if you’re noise is coming from the left side, I’d start your search there. Some great suggestions have been made, but lets start with the simple stuff to see if you can figure out where the noise is coming from first. Personally, I’d be checking the brakes first. There’s information in this article you might find helpful.
