Hey everyone,
Eric always talks about using penetrating oil to help remove rusty bolts etc. just a little bit easier. What are some good brands to use? Thanks, Bobby

I like P.B. Blaster but I’ve heard good things about a oil called Deep Creep.
ATF works good as well, and diesel fuel also.July 24, 2013 at 8:06 pm #535275thanks again
July 25, 2013 at 12:40 am #535342I used WD-40 for … 20 years or so. I bought a can of PB Blaster after talking to Eric and the other forum members here. It’s a night and day difference. PB Blaster works great, and I’ll continue to buy it.
July 25, 2013 at 3:27 am #535400PB works as advertised. Some swear by a 50-50 mix of ATF and acetone.Never tried that but have heard good things about it from guys who have used it.

JohnJuly 25, 2013 at 3:59 am #535406Not to beat a dead horse, but WD-40 is a Water Displacer (hence the WD)… It has lubricating properties, but is not that great of a lubricant.
I like PB because it is easy to get but have tried Kroil (made in Nashville) and there are those who swear it is better than PB… I haven’t seen that much of a difference and since I have had to order Kroil by mail order, it is just easier to buy PB at the local store.
As for Acetone and Transmission fluid, I have heard great things as well, but it just isn’t as handy as a simple can of PB…
Just my 2 cents.

I too have had great luck with PB Blaster and was wondering how Kroil compared but haven’t tried it as its hard to get. So now you’ve put that question to rest for me, thanks.
July 25, 2013 at 4:35 am #535418I was under the impression that WD 40 stood for War Department 40 as in the 40th formula tried. It was the S**t when it came out but the new stuff is much better even though one can get WD 40 in 5 gallon tubs.

Yes, the 40th part is correct…. Here it is right from the source…

July 26, 2013 at 2:22 am #535561Try Kroil or Sili-Kroil.Both are excellent.
July 26, 2013 at 4:38 am #535585I first try to use a wire brush to brush around the bolt head or the threads of a fastener to remove as much dirt and rust as I can. Then I use either PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench. I’ve had good luck with both.
July 27, 2013 at 6:11 am #535890I used to use WD-40, but as I learned on here it is just a “water displacement” and is pretty bad as a penetrating oil. After doing some of my own research I found this article:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182271
After reading it I gave it a shot and mixed ATF with standard nail polish remover (mostly acetone) and it worked amazingly well . Bolts that I have broken using WD-40 I can easily get off with a ratchet with little torque. Its not an aerosol and requires a little squirt bottle or oiler but it worked very well for me. It’s all I use now.
