pcv and burning oil?

I have a 2004 Hyundai accent and my engine is burning a lot of oil in all cylinders. I have a very goodfeeling it’s my PCV causing this. Not sure if I should just replace it since the part is cheap or if I should do a little more investigating.. not sure where to start though.. (there is no leak) I’m adding about 2 quarts betweenoil changes. (about 5000 miles)

    Any thoughts?

Out of curiosity, what troubleshooting have you performed that leads you to think it’s PCV problem?

The reason I ask is that there a several failure modes that can lead to oil burning, and each of them has their own specific symptoms.

I went to clean my map sensor (located next to hose from pcv) and saw oil in the intake and around the seal for the map sensor. Still need to take the Pcv out and check for oil in it…. When i was checking the Spark plugs for signs of burnt oil one of the wires fell apart (i guess it was old) so I had to run and get new wires and head to work. going to check Pcv in the morning

I also put uv dye in the oil to look for leaks and found nothing.

With a 2004 car with around 100000 miles on it (or even less) you are going to find oil in the intake even if everything was normal. It is just what happens with lots of engine hours and a recirculating system for crankcase gasses. It is why some enthusiasts fit catch cans on their systems to catch most of the gunk before it gets to the intake manifold to keep it clean and dry of oil residues.

Oil in the intake does not mean a faulty PCV is the primary cause of the oil loss source in your case. If it were my car I would change the PCV anyway as you may find it fairly sludged up by now in any event. If the PCV is faulty it cannot properly regulate air flow and help prevent oil being drawn up out of the engine.

You may be burning most of the oil due to significant piston ring wear – which you can test for. If the car has a poor oil change record from new(too few oil changes for both miles and time) higher piston ring wear will be one of the results of neglect.

You may also be burning some oil due to poor valve seals. If you see oil smoke on start up and after the car has been sitting for hours, that is a good indication of oil getting in via the valve seals.

It’s not unusual to find a little oil in the air intake. It’s also not unusual for an Accent to burn oil as the mileage increases. If the PCV valve has never been changed it’s due anyway. It may or may not cure your problem but I think it’s worth a try.

Two quarts between changes is really not excessive in my opinion but it won’t get better either.

Dang… Was hoping that wouldn’t be the case. Was hoping it would be a easy fix.. would only have 1 day at most to fix it and don’t have the money to have someone else do it.

          Thank you!

There’s always oil going through the pcv valve. It goes through mostly as vapor and then recondenses. I know this because I can find clean oil in my turbo intake when the oil in the engine is black. This is normal. What isn’t normal is when the pcv valve or pcv hose gets plugged. Then there is no vent for engine blowby and oil will be forced through the seals.

On a new engine you can have this oil going through the pcv valve and the oil level remains full. And, even a new engine consumes some oil. What is happening here is contaminates are building up in the oil fast enough to equal the amount of oil lost.
