I decided to try out a different mechanic because this shop is quite a bit closer than the one I typically go to. They were also having a special for an oil change, so I thought, “why not?”. Anyway, due to the mileage

At first glance it doesn’t seem too bad.

does not seem unreasonable. wires, rotor, and distributor cap seem a little pricey. See if maybe you can bring in your own parts or if you can get a discounted labor rate for getting a decent amount of work done.

No offense, but I’d do the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filter, and all of that myself. All are fairly easy fixes that all told would less than 2 hours with very basic hand tools.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I’d leave the timing belt and water pump to the professional.

Parts are a little high not ridiculous but you could save some money buy yourself, and at first glance I saw the bottom price and was like 900+ just for a tune up DAMN, but then I realized your getting a timing belt and water pump too. so yeah its not all that bad.

4 hours to do a timing belt/water pump change on an 88 crx seems a bit long to me, but that’s just me, I could be wrong, that may be standard. Defintely agree with looking to do the spark plugs, wires, distributor yourself. That will save you a lot of money.

Quality parts can almost always be found cheaper on the internet. A lot of the work you had done can easily be done yourself. I always have questions about “shop supplies” and “hazardous waste disposal fees” . I think you got a good deal on the timing belt and water pump labor though
