I replaced the intake gaskets on my wife’s 1999 Chevy Suburban.this truck is the 1500 (1/2 ton) with 2wd and the 350 (R) engine. On the driver’s side part of the lower intake, behind the a/c compressor, is a braided rubber hose with aluminum ends and a fitting. One fitting screws into the lower intake and the other end screws into the exhaust manifold above where the exhaust pipe attaches. I reckon this has to deal with the EGR. Now then, I am trying to re-attach the fitting on the intake manifold end, but it appears the threads maybe partially stripped. I cleaned the threads on the fitting and on the intake (the best I could access those), but the threads on the fitting would not catch. I used a small, three-sided metal file to try and clean the threads up on the fitting, but that ain’t working either. I tried some local parts stores, but nobody has a thread clean out tool large enough to fit inside where the fitting attaches on the lower manifold. The fitting is a 7/8 size, but I don’t know what size the threads are. What do y’all reckon?

Can the fitting itself be unscrewed and replaced? Otherwise a dye big enough
will need to be found. Sears?

I replaced the intake manifold gaskets on my wife’s 1999 Chevy Suburban. Attempts at reconnecting the EGR hose back into the lower part of the intake has led the fitting to become partially stripped. I have taken the time with a small triangular file to file the threads, but I’m not getting anywhere. The tapered fitting is a 7/8-14, but I cannot find a thread repair kit of that size at my local auto parts stores, all I find are heli-coil kits for spark plug thread repair. What other suggestions are available from you more knowledgeable Fellers?

How about a picture or two of what we are looking at. So we can all see the problem.

The photos I have added show the fitting that inserts into the driver’s side of the lower intake manifold, right behind the ac compressor. This fitting is part of a braided rubber hose that goes from the intake manifold to the driver’s side exhaust manifold right about where the exhaust pipe attaches. Both ends are aluminum with the threaded fittings.

                    That’s not a tapered fitting….

Looking at Tap and Die sets from Craftsman, Harbor Freight, O’Reilly Auto Parts, etc. there aren’t any with the 7/8-14 size I need.
