I have a 1990 ford ranger 4×4 with 10 in. rear brakes. I was changing the shoes, and drums, but as I’m putting them back on I noticed they weren’t sitting right. The problem is that the metal bar that goes across the drum from shoe to shoe is seemingly too large. I know this is a result of the parking brake actuator lever being pulled too tight, causing both shoes to be pushed out. What I can’t figure out is how to relieve that tension. I tried disconnecting the parking brake at the connection where it branches into two cables for both wheels, that didn’t help. Any suggestions?

Well, the parking brake shouldn’t be applied when you have the drum off and when you have the brakes apart you generally have to turn in the slack adjuster before you install new pads. Maybe this will help:

The parking brake isn’t engaged, which is why I’m confused. The parking brake cable is still pulling on the lever, even when the parking brake is not engaged. When I do engage the parking brake, It doesn’t get tighter, Is that cable siezed?

Sounds likely. It should move freely in the state you’re describing.
