it works great when trying to separate from the knuckle. I know it works get for honda/acura’s not sure about other makes and models but its a great trick especially if you don’t have a BFH its a great trick saved me so much time and aggravation after i did this after doing it

How would you go about installing the new part?

That trick only really works on Honda products. I’ve had better luck using a pitman arm puller placed on the lower control arm so that the forcing screw pushes against the threaded part of the ball joint.
