      2002 Toyota ECHO
      1NZ-FE (1.5 L)
      5-speed

      163k

P0420 – car runs perfectly, no drivability issues.

      Catalytic Converter temp data:
At full operating temp, in neutral at 3000 rpm … my outlet temp was 80-100 degrees hotter than inlet.

Here are two live-data graphs showing my O2 voltage (as described in Eric’s video). Both of these were taken at full operating temp. You can see the voltage drop to zero when I let off the throttle.

      # 1 was a 30 second highway trip at 70 mph

      # 2 was an 80 second in town trip from 0-50 mph (accelerating from a stop light)

I am thinking my cat is still good, with a bad downstream O2 sensor. What are your thoughts ?

Your Cat still may be within specs, but it may not be a bad O2 sensor…

Toyotas of this era were known to throw this code while the cat was still operating efficiently.. (could pass tailpipe emission test)… several models after 2002 had to get the ECM re flashed at the dealers so they wouldn’t throw this code so easily…

If you choose to replace the O2 sensor, only use a denso…

            POSSIBLY SOLVED !!!

One day before the check engine light came on, I filled up at a different gas station than I usually do (with 10% ethanol).

            I thought it was a huge coincidence…

I ran through that tank and filled up again at my normal (non-ethanol) station this morning…

Check engine light goes away !
