      Hey all,

My 2003 Nissan Altima S.E 3.5 is a bit sick. First a p0328 (no CEL) popped up about a week ago and found that a mouse ate the wire harness for the knock sensor. I have one on order should be in soon. This morning started the car with a bit of an extended crank which has been normal since the knock sensor is out of service. Found CEL on, got to work plugged my OBD2 reader showed p0306 misfire cylinder 6. My question is could that be related to the knock sensor bing out of service?. This is the first time that a CEL has been present.

I cleared the code for p0306, but will have to wait till lunch to see if it returns.

The KS will retard ignition timing if it senses any type of pinging or knocking.

I doubt the P0306 would be a result of the P0328.

After you have fixed the KS wiring, i would start with this video –

I don’t believe the knock sensor has anything to do
          with the p0306 #6 misfire.Try doing a power balance
test per this video.do it both ways fuel and spark.

No relationship between knock sensor and misfiring. Likely that your ignition coil is going bad – which is a common problem.

Thanks guys I was looking for that video. What I’ll do is swap out the suspected coil #6 with a working coil #4 next to it. Looking at the video when Eric says to unplug each coil watch for a drop in the engine. Without the drop means a bad coil, correct?.

Not sure if other coils are the same way, but these coils slowly losses resistance over time so if you are just starting to see this problem, then you would have to drive the car for some time before another misfire happens, and if first coil is going bad, the other 5 will be following soon.

The coils are 3 pins and the way you identify the bad coil is to measure the resistance between the pins using Ohm meters. OE parts are made by Hitachi (about $80/ea) and should last about 60K+ miles. The only aftermarket coils worth your money is made by Meyle (made in China, $40 each)

if the rpm drop is not heard.it means that either a plug is
not firing or a coil has a problem. you could either swap
the parts to another cylinder to see if the problem moves or
test spark with a spark tester.

Cleared to p0306 code for the drive home from work, no CEL for now. I’m thinking the coils are on the way out possibly. Couldn’t tell the difference when the code was present meaning the engine did not run ruff. Coils here in Canada $107 ea, I’ll stick to the OEM coils but one at a time:S

how many miles on the car? Have the plugs been pulled
to read them? If the car has a 100k then it may just need
                      a set of plugs.Ngk only.;)

113k 0n the plugs? Then start with a set of plugs.

No I changed the plugs around 100k miles so there’s 13,000 on the new ones

Installed a new knock sensor harness which brought back performance/power back to my engine. As for the p0306, I did a partial power balance test where as I unplugged the coils to 2-4-6 and noticed the expected change in idle. I’ll have to keep an eye on that maybe the coil pack is on it’s way out… Thanks for the help everyone.

Try swapping coil #6 with #4. see if code p0304 comes
up.if it does. Then that cop needs replacement.

Whoops forgot to mention that I did just that with the coil swap. Bought a mouse trap to just in case Micky decided to come bad for my wires.
