Ok. I own a 2003 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7l v6 that has about 113,000 miles on it. The other day I was driving the interstate and it started to shake really bad. I pulled off to the side of the road to see what was wrong. I put it in park and the shaking went away. As soon as I go to take off again, mind we are on the interstate, it begins shaking again. I pull over imediatally and shut the engine off to see what the problem is. Im thinking tranny. Well I turn the key over to the start position 3 times to pull the codes. But it ran perfectly after that. I got a P0300 and a P0301. I got these codes right after I changed the spark plugs. but i cleared them and they hadnt come back til now. Do you think that if I pull the ignition coil and switch it with another it will tell me if the coil is bad? What do you think that I should do?

Well the p0300 is a general misfire or coil issue. That thing has the multiple coil packs correct? The p0301 is pointing toward the specific coil pack or cylinder (p0301 is cylinder one.) If it has been awhile change the spark plugs. If you still get the code visually inspect the plug wires (remember wires can be bad even if they appear to be perfect) and get the coil pack checked. If all that checks out it could be the crank position sensor. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the input. Im gonna try what I can. Im praying thats its just a bad coil pack because I don’t wanna dig in it for the crank position sensor.

If I might point out the obvious here…How long has it gone since you cleared?

Check the plugs. If they’re the right ones, and such(should nearly always go with the OEM), check for cracking or a chip in the porcelain, and of course the condition and gap.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this but “If I may point out the obvious” is kind of rude.

Lets troubleshoot.Do we have solid spark to each
cylinder? Do we have the proper fuel to each cylinder?
here are some videos to help troubleshoot.

How? I’m emphasizing something that rather screams out to me at the start. People look for the most complicated explanation when working on something that they often miss the obvious. It’s not a statement of superiority, simply something he states himself, and that seems he might have missed, which will possibly save him time and/or money. Changed plugs not that long ago in a friend’s car, which then had a miss issue shortly after, two of the plugs had hairline cracks in the porcelain. Swapped out, no more missing, job done.

Always check the gap.and if ya drop one in the plug well take it back out and recheck..Could just be a bad plug or gap. Then check coil, spray a mist of water on it while running and lok for change in idle instead of swapping them around, even though that works too, just more work..

I would double check your work making sure the coil boot is secure on top of the plug.

Also check to see if you have spark going to those problem cylinders.

+1 with using OEM plugs and seeing if the misfire will move to a different cylinder if you swap coils around.

The video’s College Man posted should help.

Good luck and keep us posted.

hey guys thanks for the info. I dont get to check this very often so I will get right on the project. It seems as though this problem only persists when Im on a long trip. I will disect it in a little while and see what I find.

What i forgot to mention the first time was that I changed the spark plugs and forgot to plug in the number 1 cylinder which gave me the p0301 but until now the issue for the p0300 and p0301 had never come back up.

Did I understand correctly that the shaking is only present when the vehicle is moving? A primary engine problem seems an unlikely cause of that, and I wonder if the codes may be from a different problem. Shaking only while moving, especially vigorous shaking, is often something in the drivetrain, starting with the wheels and moving back to the transmission. If it’s vigorously shaking while at idle, I would have a look at engine mounts.

I only experience the shaking while i was moving at 70 mph. I pulled off the road because I was concerned and knew that what was going on wasnt good. But as soon as it happened I pulled off the road and shut the engine off. I didnt know what it was. I was able to get the codes and here is the list of items
                                  p0300
                                  p0301
                                  p0305
                                  p0306

I did a tune up in may but nothing had really “misfired” that I could tell til now. I accidentally forgot to plug back in the cylinder 1 coil pack after I had finished changing them tho. At the moment I am checking all of the spark plugs and coil packs. Ive done all of them on the drivers side but from what I believe cylinders 5&6 are on the passenger side.
