I have an 1998 Honda Civic DX that is overheating when i idle. The radiator fan is not coming on when i turn the a/c on. So this leaves me to suspect something is wrong with the fan system. I just replaced the fan switch, the cooling fan fuse under the hood is good, i jumped the fan switch harness (female connector) by hooking it up to the battery and the radiator fan comes on and i can hear the rely clicking. What else could be my problem?

The radiator fan (passenger side) is switched per coolant temp. The condenser fan (driver side) is switched on with the compressor. Which is not working? Both? If you’ve verifies the motors work, and the relays and fuses are OK, and neither fan is working, then it sounds like the fan switch or associated wiring. I would study the circuit diagram and, depending on whether one or both fans are out, follow the wiring back to where the buck stops.

            electrical, i love it, not.
i’d check the relay first. 2 parts, the solenoid which seems to be working and the switch. disconnect power from the switch, and an ohmmeter should show infinite resistance, activate the solenoid and the switch should show a very low resistance.

next there should be a temperature sensor in the circuit, when the engine gets hot enough it sends a signal to the relay which turns on the fan. probably only one sensor in the car and it operates the light or gauge as well.

I’d like to clarify, based on your earlier mention of the A/C. When you turn on the compressor, does the condenser fan turn on? Is it only the radiator fan not working, or are both fans not working?

replacing the fan switch solved the problem. thanks
