Overheating Issue

So, I was going to clean my intake manifold on my 1995 Integra and in the process I had to drain the cooling system. Well, after I got done and put everything back together, I flushed the cooling system and put fresh coolant in with distilled water 50/50. Drove it around and saw that it started to overheat. I noticed the radiator fans would not kick on. I did another flush, I even filled the system up with just water and the thermostat out and ran the engine to get all the antifreeze out. Flushed it again. I tested the thermo in a pot of boiling water, it was fine. I put it back in, refilled the system making sure that I opened the air bleeder, then ran the engine to operating temp and squeezed the hose. Still overheating, fans won’t kick on. I checked the fuses and switched the relays, they’re fine. The fans only turn on with the AC. Another observation is the upper hose is hot, lower hose it cool. I checked the ECT switch with a paper clip, it’s fine. I know the temp sensor it good. I didn’t have these problems before this whole operation. I have no idea where else to look. I’d really love any information. Thanks.

Sounds like you’ve got air in the system.

I wouldn’t have any idea how. I opened the bleeder as i was filling until it had a straight line of antifreeze coming out of it then closed it. I squeezed the upper radiator hose. I even left the engine running for like 20 minutes with the cap off even when it is spewing out antifreeze all over the place.

Was the heater on during all this?

Yes, i always leave it on anyways since my car doesn’t have AC.

I do wander if I just turn the car on with the radiator cap on and the bleeder valve open, if it will release the air bubbles out of the system. I did do that, but it seemed like it would never stop. I may try it again. Other than that, i’m not sure what else I could do.

We’re talking about the actual heat, not the fan right?
Is the front end of the car elevated?

The fan turns on when when the AC is on. No cold air is what I meant. But anyways, the car was level through most of it, then today I had the front elevated and did a little bit of the same. No cigar.

Make sure the temperature on the heater is set to hot. Not good enough to merely turn on the heater fan. Gota get coolant into the heater core in order to force all the air outa the system. You probably did that already, but the reference to the heater on because the air conditioner doesn’t work made me concerned

So, just to clarify, have it set to heat and the blower motor off? Which is the only time the cooling fan comes on. Somehow air bubbles in the system can effect the operation of the cooling fans?

Heater is set to heat, fan is off. What this is doing is opening up the hoses so the hot coolant can get into the heater core in the dash. If you don’t have it set to heat, there’s always going to be a pocket of air in the heater core that’ll never get emptied out.

Well, it has always been on heat since i don’t get any cold air in the car anyways. Haven’t really touched it.

But I would like an answer to this question. Would turning the car on and opening the bleeder valve bleed all of the air out if i just let it sit until it starts bleeding antifreeze? Radiator cap is on as I do this.

Probably not, since the bubbles rise. The bleeder valve is lower than the radiator cap. However I’ve never owned a car with a bleeder, so I can’t tell you for certain.
About that heater, you’ve said it’s always on. This is what I was concerned about. In this case the cabin blower fan is irrelevant. The red/blue knob MUST be set all the way to red, for the duration of the system bleed. With the front end elevated, the car needs to idle through at least a couple of radiator fan cooling cycles. Then top off the radiator, fill to the bottom of the filler neck. Yup,it can be messy! Check for bubbles after a couple fan cycles. Eric likely has a video, if you’re still unsure, or having problems try the video. Sometimes it helps to watch, maybe see something we missed.

Not even sure if it is even going to post my video.
