Overfilled engine oil. leaking like faucet now

      Hi,
      1997 Honda Civic DX

      Rookie mistake… I believe I overfilled engine oil and when I started the engine, it burst instantly and made nice puddle and trail on the driveway. I drove it about 3 miles across town yesterday after the burst (garage at another location) Today I drove about the the same. Got the oil light, added some oil to get back to the garage. I would hear a hissing sound during idle. Now when I start the car, it leaks like a faucet…What is blown??

      I didnt add too much more, maybe 1 quart. What changed this oil change was I bought Valvoline 10w-40 in 1.25gal and the FRAM High Mileage filter, both of which I’ve never used. I usually use Rotella 15w-40 1 gal and regular FRAM.

        Exactly what burst?

        That was only going to lead to issues.

        “I would hear a hissing sound during idle.”
        Might try to locate where it originates from.

        “Now when I start the car, it leaks like a faucet…What is blown??”
        If it is leaking like a faucet, you should have little trouble finding the source.

          I stuck my head a little further and saw the old filter gasket still there! simple fix!

            Yeah, always double check how much oil you are putting into the motor. It’s worth the trouble. You got lucky with that seal on the filter. You could have blown a major engine seal with too much oil in the engine. Just for your own education, what happens when you overfill an engine is the engine crank starts whipping through the oil, whipping it up. It aerates the oil, and air does not have any lubricity. Then, all your bearings turn blue and your engine seizes right up. So it certainly pays to double check everything. Stay dirty!

              i have never seen seals been damaged that way
              but i have seen the dip stick pop and oil come out that way
              on a suzuki mighty boy :cheer: .
              if you could give us more inf where leak is

                He found the leak! Old oil filter gasket didn’t get removed.

                  “Rookie mistake…”

                  For people who are new to general automotive maintenance, I suggest writing a few things down and keeping the information in your glove box:

                  -oil capacity (with and without a filter change), oil viscosity and part number of oil filter.
                  -coolant system capacity, recommended anti freeze and recommended mixture strength.
                  -tire size and tire pressure, including the compact spare.
                  -wheel nut torque.
                  -air filter part number.
                  -spark plug type and heat range.
                  -size and part number(s) of replacement wiper blades.

                  Laminate the card if you want to. Before working on your vehicle, check the info on the card and stick to the numbers religiously.

                    Why in the WORLD are you using that thick of an oil on that engine? You should be using 5W-30 on that engine! Thicker oil will put more wear on the oil pump and be more likely to blow gaskets-I strongly suggest that you drain and refill with the proper viscosity oil.

                      Perhaps the engine is quite worn? And he lives in a tropic climate? Other than that, I don’t know. Also, I advise against FRAM. I used them for a long time, and if you change your oil every 3k miles you should be okay, but they call FRAM the “Orange Can Of Death” for a reason. Upgrade to NAPA Gold or WIX (same filter.) Why do your think your old FRAM left most of its reason for existence on the oil filter gasket sealing area?
