ok so I had a lil fender bender the other day. I know I cracked the radiator in my 99 Durango. I replaced that. so I go gor the test drive confident I fixed the problem. its still over heating. next I wanna go with the thermostat since those are the only 2 parts I really know that have to do with engine over heats. so is there any more to the coolant system? radiator and thermostat.. any thing else? thanks in advance gentlemen..

Did the fan hit the radiator? If so the water pump could have been damaged.
Did you make sure to burp the system after replacing the radiator?

Dodges are hell to get the cooling systems bled right, it can take a lot of fiddling around trying to get the air out. I would easily describe it as requiring an unreasonable amount of work for what it is.

I think these are one of the makes that had the weird bleeder on the intake manifold.

I don’t understand the point of asking advice if you’re not going to listen to it. Did you just want us to re-enforce your theory or did you want a logical course of diagnosis?

just second guessing myself I guess.. im not exactly a master mechanic, so being self tought iv not done a lot of coolant work yet, just trying to state what I know and see if someone else may know something I don’t. that’s how you learn things but thanks for your help buod..

Well, I would burp the system before you spend money on a thermostat. We have no reason to assume it’s a thermostat at this point. Also (with the engine warm) look around at the water pump to make sure it’s not leaking. You should also take the belt off and make sure the water pump turns smoothly.

ok buad..heres where I am, I replaced the radiator cuz I knew that was cracked. thermostat was 10 bucks so wth I got one of those on too.. I read my manual and it said to leave the cap off and let it run to burp.. did that. it still over heated.. so I am changing the water pump, I got it off and don’t see any reason it would be faulty at all. so do you or any one else have any more ideas? im gonna replace the pump since its off but im doubting that’s gonna fix her… thanks in advance

Well, as I mentioned, burping dodges makes me want to kill myself. I do use a tool called a ‘spill free funnel’ made by Lisle which helps to confine it to an hour of jerking around with it. It’s a cheap tool, but you may have to mail order it. I’m not joking about how abnormally tedious it is to deal with dodges, I have no idea what they do to make it the way it is. They make another tool that uses compressed air to create a vacuum in the cooling system and sucks the coolant in as well. Domestic guys rave about them.

Here’s how I bled my dodge when I had it. I parked it facing up hill let the engine cool completely. Take the rad cap off grab the upper and lower hoses and squeeze them until there is no more air bubbles coming up. Then refill with water/coolant mix and repeat the process till you cannot get any more air bubbles. Now start the engine and keep grabbing those hoses and forcing air out once coolant starts coming out without you squeezing the hoses you should be done. Good luck took me quite awhile to do.

accident…no overheat….2 days later is when problem started…heres what would happen before I started working on it. I would get in and start the car. as soon as it got to the normal range (pointing straight up at 150) it will keep on going. if I pushed more than 2000 rpm it would get hotter, if I was under that (2000 rpm) it would stay where it was and/or get cooler. at times getting back to the normal range. 1st time around I was on the expressway pretty far from home so I would get it going 75 or 80 and coast it to get the air blowing over the engine without rpms on the engine. worked pretty well, by time I would get to 55 60 mph amd have to hit the gas I would be cooled down to about normal temp. any more details that may help plz ask and ill answer to the best of my ability..
