My son swapped the E4OD transmission on my 1993 Ford F150 XLT, but unfortunately in the process stripped three of the holes/bolts while reinstalling the trans pan. The bolts really won’t hold much torque at all now. And, the pan leaks pretty bad near these bolt holes. If anyone has ideas for solutions, I am all ears. Thanks!

        FOLLOW THIS PROTOCOL

        1) When you work with any thing concerning nuts or bolts make sure you have a Tap Kit right beside you. Nuts and bolts can and will break.

        2) Before you begin the job get the nust and bolts for your particular application from the dealer. These days I don’t care how they look I am replacing them. Point blank.

        3) Remove your Transmission pan. Clean it up and put on a new gasket.

        4) Tap out the holes for the 3 bolts you mentioned to a larger size.

        5) Replace the stripped out bolts with larger bolts that you tapped out and replace your existing bolts with new ones from the dealer.

        6) Finally torque them to the manufacturer’s specification.

A helicoil kit is another way to repair. It comes with the proper sized drill bit and tap… After you have drilled it and tap it you just screw in a new thread. Put your original bolts back in and torque to spec.

Thanks, guys, I have decided to hire a mechanic to heli-coil those holes. I am concerned if I try (having never done it before) I’ll make the problem worse. But it was really helpful to get educated about the process, it helped me secure help faster. ~ Pop

Try slightly longer bolts. There is usually extra threads in the bolt holes.

I drove the truck over to a buddy of mine who is general mechanic as well as a transmission rebuilder. He put helicoils in each of the three stripped holes, and leak is fixed and all is well. Turned out I didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket. He took my core transmission in exchange for the parts and labor.

Again, thanks to you guys on the ETCG website, THE place to go for help with your ride!
