1999 Honda Civic LX, United States, D16Y7 engine, 190K miles

I am in the middle of my first water pump and timing belt replacement (100K mile maintenance item).

I have a dilemma with what coolant to add to the system. Should I keep adding the green non-Honda coolant or switch to the Blue Honda Genuine Type 2 coolant? I’m assuming a water pump replacement and opening the bleeder valve still won’t remove all of the old coolant and they inevitably will mix.

About 50K miles ago I periodically was adding some of the “Universal” O’Reilly Auto parts green coolant due to a slow coolant leak I was not aware of at the time. The coolant leak has been fixed by cutting off the end of a leaky hose about 10K miles ago.

I’ve read up on mixing coolants. ETCG has said mixing green with blue is fine. I’ve seen the discussion take a step further about just making sure the coolant is silicate-free.

What’s everybody’s thoughts on my situation?

Stick with the green, if that’s what you’ve been using

Actually, I just noticed the universal O’Reilly bottle says yellow even though it pours out green! There is a reference chart on o’reilly’s website that calls it yellow too.

I’d rather just use the Honda blue but don’t want my engine to die because they mixed.

Mix the coolants in a clear bottle and let them sit on your workbench for a while. If they remain clear and nothing precipitates, you’re probably OK.

Not “definitive” but better than nothing.

The color is irrelevant. It is the chemistry that is important. The dye is added according to what the brand requests. Antifreeze is clear before it is dyed. Maybe this video will help:
