Hey guys iv got a new question…
Most of yall know iv got a 1993 ford f150 5.0

She been running pretty good -a few days ago i changed the tps with help from eric and dreamer.

But today I towed a 35 foot travail trailer…. The engine ran great never once bogged and it cost about 20$ for 69miles and i wasnt even on empty.

But on the way there about 30miles into the drive we pulled over on the side of the road for just a sec…..I looked down and my oil gage is flickering between 0 and 60.

It stopped if i reved the engine (It stopped even if I just barely touched the gas) My truck idls at around 700rpms -if i gave it just enf gas to raise it to 800 it stopped….

soo as long as it wasn’t idling it stopped…

It never once did it going down the road.

only when i came to a stop or in park idling.
I could put the truck in (Neutral)

Yeah I guess for $7 bucks it’s not that much of a gamble.

I have a ’91 F150 I inherited from my old man. Same 5.0 auto as yours. I noticed the oil pressure gage dipping to zero at idle just like yours. I called the old man, and he said it’s done that since he owned it, and he had talked to his buddy (an old Ford mechanic I think) who said they were pretty notorious for having the sending units wear out. My truck has 143k miles on it. I bought the sending unit, and it’s still sitting in the toolbox in my truck. If it were really running at zero for a few years, I’m sure I would’ve lost some bearings by now.

+20 to all!!!! My truck has over 256k on it. Im pretty sure at one point it was rebuilt ether that or its a hell of a engine….
Its never smoked or anything like that – I haven’t ever had it break down really !!!

              I will say this

Check the wiring going to it, maybe the connection is lose at the unit it’s self.
                Oil level full?

Could be the sending unit going out , but I would also check for a loose connection in the wiring . check for a loose wire in the connector that attaches to the sending unit as well as any frayed/shorted wiring along the length of the wires running from the sender to the gauge.

I was a court low. when i got home -i just added a court!!!

Did you drive it after that and see if it was ok?

Yes i drove it after adding the court and it did fine….. But it started doing it on the way there 70miles or more then when i got into the town i need to be at it stopped i dropped the trailer . I drove home and it did not do it (70 miles) I got home and was checking everything and found her just above a court low. I add the court drove it around and did not do it..

That was probably your problem then.

Why did it not do it on the way home????

Could it be bc the trail had the truck at a weird angle ????Lower in the back end and the front being higher???

But like i said it was steal in the crosshatch (Almost a cort low)

Iv got a rear main that leaks soo I wait for the engine to get a court low and then add oil… Its NEVER EVER done this before and Iv let it get 1 1/2 courts low before.

I would understand that being the problem a little more if it was dropping just fluctuating.

But it wasnt doing that – it was jumping between -0 and full….it was actually going below 0. Soo idk what to think!!!

+1 on the sender. Its a one wire circuit.

Check the wiring going to the sensor. I believe it should be 12v when unhooked so you could ground your test light, KOEO and check for 12v at that wire. Check for corrosion on the wi

Step one, check the actually oil pressure with an analog oil pressure gage. Low oil can cause that problem for sure that’s why they have gages and lights for oil pressure in the first place but the first step is always to verify the problem and if you find low or fluctuating oil pressure you know where you need to go next and if not here is the video. If you find the oil pressure is constant and good then replace the sending unit as that is most often the cause if you find that the oil pressure is in spec, not a bad idea to check the connections as well as has been suggested.
