“I get asked about oil questions a LOT. For that reason I’ve asked my friends at Valvoline to help me answer some of them. This way we can get an ‘expert’ to weigh in on some of the most popular questions about oil. We’re scheduling a video shoot where we will answer questions submitted by you. Those questions will be taken from this forum thread. So post whatever questions you might have about oil, oil additives, oil viscosities, and generally whatever you feel you need to know about oil, and your question may be answered by the expert in the upcoming video.”

Certain engines, despite TLC and good oil change etiquette, eventually develop problems with oil rings (or other rings) sticking. This causes high oil consumption and hydrocarbon emissions. (A well known example is the old GM Saturn S-series with 1.9 L engines.)

Are there any specific Valvoline oils that can better protect against or clearly prevent piston ring deposits? It may be a myth but some rumors say that high detergency engine oils made for diesel engines (usually 15W-40) can help clean up the pistons/ rings?

I see a lot of people using full synthetic oils, or using brands like Royal Purple, in older model vehicles. I was once told that older vehicles could leak with synthetic oils, and synthetic oils are more geared toward the new vehicles or performance vehicles. But then I have also heard that older vehicles with high mileage do better on full synthetics. What’s the deal with full synthetic and older/high mileage vehicles? Are people wasting their money by putting high priced synthetics in their older vehicles, or is it actually helping?

I saw this as I looked at the Valvoline website ( http://www.valvoline.com/faqs/motor-oil/general-motor-oil/1 )

… it seems to answer the following question mentioned by another member – Machine3 (#97906 – a few above)

Does motor oil expire? How long does motor oil generally last?

Valvoline motor oil does not have a documented expiration date. Under optimal conditions, the product is stable for an extended period of time and can be used as long as the American Petroleum Institute (API) rating on the label continues to meet or exceed the requirements listed in your owner’s manual. If the rating is still current, shake the container before use to blend any additives that may have settled.

Zinc (ZDDP) has been removed from motor oil because it clogs catalytic converters. I have a couple of 1960s cars and I have read that the lack of zinc in today’s oil can cause accellerated wear on camshaft lobes, particularly high lift camshafts.

Is it really necessary to add the ZDDP additive when changing oil? Is there enough ZDDP in racing oil? Is racing oil suitable for street use? Is the zinc issue all a fallacy?

What current part store motor oil brands are actually Valvoline products and are there any differences in the formula of store branded motor oil and Valvoline branded? Also, is there any way to decode any part numbers or other markings on store oil brands containers to determine if they are made by Valvoline?

                    Hey there..

What are the difference in oil compositions between engine oil, power steering oil, manual transmission oil, automatic transmission oil? the only thing i know is, use the wrong one and you will get a free visit to the local mechanic.

                    best wishes.

                      Hi valvoline guy,

I’d like you to tell me, in as much detail as you can, what the difference between synthetic and conventional oil is. I’d like, if you can, actual details about the chemistry of it, not just “synthetic is engineered” or “synthetic has more additives in it” or “synthetic is synthetic” (which is the answer I get most often). Break it down for me.

                      Thanks!

What are the base numbers for your 5W-30? Are they the same for 10W-30? At what point is an oil considered worn out?
                        Thanx in advance

One person does a lot a stop and go traffic, compared to the person who hops on the freeway and is doing 70. They both drive 20 miles a day, will this make a difference in how frequent to change the oil?
I know about changing Transmission Fluid more often if you tow, but what about engine oil?
