Sometimes, things don’t always work out as planned.

What I love about this video is it shows how something as simple as the oil pan can become such a project in itself but people don’t think a thing of it. Yeah so you installed a baffle and a turbo line to your oil pan and clearanced it. So what. Right?

I like seeing the realistic challenges as well as opposed to the edited perfections only.

If your wife had old lipstick she doesn’t use, it makes a decent marker for checking interference too. Grease works OK too.
The last two engines I built (stroker engines with main studs, aftermarket main caps, and main stud girdles), I spent hours modifying the oil pan, windage tray, and oil pickups to fit correctly.

Thanks to everyone that made comments so far.

I just wanted to clear the air here. A lot of negative comments were posted to this video on YouTube. Mostly telling me I was doing it wrong by installing the fitting this way. The reason I did it this way is because that’s what the turbo instructions called for. Yes, I had the oil pan off the car and could have welded in a bung. However, I wanted to show how the instructions said to do it so that anyone reading them would have a better idea of what they were talking about.

The fitting sealed, it doesn’t leak, and I have every confidence in it. Just because I didn’t do it the way some people wanted me to, doesn’t mean I did it wrong. It’s results that count and with this method, the result is an oil return that works and doesn’t leak.

As for Kalvinator engines, they were just doing what the customer asked for. My deepest regret is that many took this as a poor reflection on them and their work. That simply isn’t the case. Kevin and Justin do fine work and I plan to take every engine I plan to build to them from here on out.

Some of those youtube comments are pretty harsh.

A large-diameter washer behind the turbo oil fitting’s hex flats might be an idea. It’ll give the fitting something positive and flat to tighten up against, rather than having it descend into that bellmouth and randomly fetching up against the brass hex points.
