      Hello,

I have a question. I have been servicing my 2006 Nissan Quest at the dealership now from 2006-2011. Under warranty care services. I changed my own oil since then. I was using OEM filters, but wanted something better. So I heard great things about Champion Labs and their filter line so I ordered on line using their website to be listed for my van as a Champ PH2876. So I ordered a 12 pack. Now I get them and I see them thinking I got the wrong part, but double checking and seeing this is the filter for my van! So question is why is the new one so small? Will it do the same as the OEM? I use Mobil 1 High Mileage Synthetic 5W-30 oil. Hope you can get an answer for me. Thank you.

      P.S. 94, 432 miles

I have no idea what is inside of either one. However, the big can has to have a bigger filter element. That, I like. Other than that I like oil filters with the bypass valve at the screw-on end and filter elements with metal end caps. To find out what’s inside you’ll have to cut them open.

        BTW, nice looking rig.

You may want to try Bob is the Oil Guy website (BITOG) and ask this question….. Those people are serious about their oil and filters…. Many times to the point of humor with endless bickering about everything related to oil….

Both have by-pass valves rated at 13 psi. The OEM filters I always used ended in 9E000 because they were made in Japan. I see they are now being made in Mexcio ending in 9E01A which I looked inside only not cutting it open to see the are identical. I was at Walmart and examined a Fram and Bosch and they two were of the same size as the Champ filter. Hopefully someone will have an answer. Thanks again for your help.

Far as I know, yes, things that help, that have no copyright issues or the like or always welcome. +1 to that site as well btw. Interesting articles, which I’ve linked here previously.

Cut open for those who know filters. I am no expert. Thank you

I find that oil filter companies try to consolidate part numbers whenever they can. The champ filter for your Nissan might fit several other applications and they try to make the filter fit them all.

It has the bypass at the bottom which I don’t like. Other than that it looks well made. Filter element is a little small.

Years ago a controversy arose concerning which filter fit a certain Mitsubishi engine. In midyear Mitsubishi changed the filter size so you were supposed to go by the date the car was made. All the filter guides had this information and they all had it backwards. Mitsubishi had gone to a larger filter and all the filter guides had you buying the smaller filter.

Finally, Mitsubishi, tired of getting inquires, put out the information that any filter specified for any Mitsubishi car or van engine would work on any other Mitsubishi car or van engine. I immediately started using the filter specified for the Dodge Stealth (actually a Mitsubishi) because it was the largest of them all.

Time for another difference of opinion on the oil filter. As long as the specs are the same, it’s not FRAM, and it fits…then any filter will do for virtually any daily driver. I just buy the least expensive one…which are often my Hyundai and ACDelco filters. I don’t know how much the filters are from Nissan. The larger medium I suppose is useful if you live in the Saharan desert or refuse to change a filter at regular intervals.
