oil dipstick difficult to read

I recently bought a 2001 Subaru Forester. I feel stupid, as I am having trouble reading the oil level on the dipstick. Maybe this is a common problem I am not aware of?. I have checked first thing in the morning and I have checked ten minutes after shutting the engine down. Nothing seems to make a difference. There’s never a defined line. or there is a gap between two different lines. Am I picking up oil in the tube when I pull the dipstick out? I’ve never had a problem like this in any other car I have owned. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
