Hey guy/gals i have a 2007 5.7 Hemi that has approx. 113000 miles on her. has had regular maintenance and very well taken care of since the wife and i have owned it, we bought it used with about 82k on the ticker. I have noticed lately when i go do the oil changes at 3k or so maybe a little more but not much, my oil level is down about 2.5 quarts. i have been using synthetic since we bought it and i used castrol edge for awhile and then switch to penzoil platinum. the consumption is about the same no matter what brand between the two i use, the weight is 5w-20. i did a tune up and replaced the pcv, the original one i took out was pretty gunky but still rattled when i shook it. Chrysler states somewhere, i believe in the owners manual that 1 quart for 750 miles with an engine that has 50,000 miles or more. to me that seems like a lot of consumption. the past few months i have hauled a 2 axle trailer behind it because we move and she was frighted not sure if that may have had some part in the consumption. any ideas or advice would be great. the engine runs strong and sounds good and i have no issues, also has no leaks

A quart in 1000 miles is acceptable. More than that I’d suggest requires investigation. What isn’t acceptable is letting it get low on oil. You need to be checking it more often.

I find that a lot of newer cars consume oil more than older cars at the same mileage. I blame this on the fact that the piston oil rings are thinner and provide less drag for better fuel economy and don’t seal as well. Newer cars with multi valve engines have more valve guides that allow traces of oil to leak by and burn in the cylinders.
A qt. in 1000 miles is really not that bad in my opinion but I suggest that you add oil when needed.

            1. STOP USING SYNTHETIC OIL
            2. STOP USING 5W20
Those are too thin for your engine. It might have been OK for a new engine but now that it’s all gaping everywhere, you basically burning $$ down the exhaust, literally.
Switch to 10W30 conventional oil. Substitute half a qrt of oil with same amount of Lucas HD oil stabilizer. be happy.
I actually have 07 Camry that is supposed to do 5W20 and synth, and I took her off that expensive milk last year. Not feasible.

I also have real stupid one. 3000 miles…. Is that what your manual says? Or, you just decided so?

A qrt per 1000 miles is NORMAL? That’s GM standard. They also say piston slap is normal. ISS clunk is normal. They say many crappy things happening to their cars are “normal”. By THEIR standard. How come wife’s 3.0L V6 by Toyota takes only half a qrt per maybe 5 000 miles? What standard is that?
