Oil consumption

I just dropped a rebuilt Jasper motor (5.4L) into my 2000 ford expedition. I have 1600 miles on the new motor and I have noticed that it is consuming oil (maybe 2 quarts so far). I changed the oil for the first time at 800 miles.

This got me wondering if this is normal and if so – what amount of oil consumption is considered normal? To me it doesn’t seem like a motor should burn any oil – especially if it’s just been rebuilt. I have checked my driveway for new oil spots and don’t see any.

That’s not normal. What parts actually got replaced? Did you just replace the block, the block and heads or, was it a complete engine with intake and everything? Was the engine already broken in? Did you do the work yourself or did a shop do it?

It was a long block with rebuilt heads already installed. I put on a new intake manifold as well. I broke it in by driving mostly in the city the first 500 miles then I changed the oil at 800 for the first time. I was a quart low at the oil change which I wrote off as the motor was bone dry originally. Now has 1600 miles & I was a quart low when I checked it today. This seems like a lot to me.

I see chatter on the internet that these ford motors (triton) will burn some oil. I’ll keep an eye on it and update the post as soon as I get some more data.

Also – I did the work myself on this project.

Almost every time I’ve read/heard what manufacturers consider ‘normal’ oil consumption it’s 1 quart every 800-1000 miles. I’m not saying that’s acceptable, but I think that’s what you will find when you ask.

I don’t care what anyone says. My 1980 chevy pick-up with a 350 consumes maybe a quart every 3000 miles. Since I have about 250,000 miles on that engine I would expect a new engine to consume almost nothing.
I was always under the impression that the “break-in’ oil was supposed to be used for the first 6000 miles unless you break the motor in before you install it.
So you got a new manifold but, my thoughts are maybe it is something to do with the intake components that were from the old engine. Like a bad pcv valve or something.

I got to the bottom of my problem and it was self induced. I own an expy with the 5.4L motor (6 quarts) and a 2003 mustang with the exact same motor in a 4.6L version (5 quarts). I kept thinking where is that oil going ?

                  Options:
                  a) Leaking on my driveway.
                  b) Burning up in the combustion chamber
                  c) It was never put into the motor to start with because the owner doesn’t know the correct fill capacity for his vehicle.

Any guess as to the right answer ? It’s so stupid that you know it must be true. I can swap an engine – but can’t seem to read the owners manual… Someone needs to take my wrenches away !

It takes a real man to admit a mistake like that. I’m glad you found the issue. Thanks for keeping us up to date and for using the ETCG forum.
