oil change,2012 impala lt oci

i have a 2012 impala lt with 38k. its been 5k on dexos semi synthetic oil.olms shows 52%. how lomg will this oil last? 7.5K? im not happy chevy says wait till 15%? is it reosanable to call chevy dealer and see what they say? ss oil was not meant to last more than 5-6k.

Chevy uses that oil percentage system.Its supposed to
calculate the way you drive judge the oil change interval.
6k miles between changes sounds reasonable. run the meter
to zero% or just change it according to mileage.

first of all its your car. If you want to change it before 15% that’s perfectly fine. As long as you are using the correct oil and you aren’t going over what Chevy says.

one thing I would ask is if its suppose to take dexos-1 or dexos-2. Dexos 2 requires a full synthetic and those are usually set for 7-10,000 miles per oil change interval.

You can change the oil as often as you want. Just be sure you use the correct oil and filters and keep all your bills for your supplies just in case there is a warranty issue down the road.

I agree with everything that’s been posted so far. I believe those maintenance reminders also take driving habits into account. Also I agree that if you wan’t to change the oil, go ahead and change it. It really can’t hurt. Just be sure to reset the reminder when you do. To be honest, I don’t know how to do that on that vehicle. Perhaps someone on the forum can offer up that information.

reset oil life procedure: with key on engine off and oil life % on the display you push the gas pedal all the way down to the floor 3 times within 5 seconds. Chevy hasn’t changed much in that respect.

Oil changes are cheaper than engines. Every 4000 kms [2500 miles] for me. Dont matter if it still looks clean or not. $30 for oil and a filter every 4k kms is cheap insurance.

Problem is that it’s not $30.00 for an oil change with the new Dexos spec oil. It could be 3 X that amount.

Honestly, I don’t think that would be an issue with synthetic. You can run that stuff a VERY long time before it becomes a problem. It doesn’t break down in the same way conventional oil does.
