I was looking at oil today as i passed by it and just browsed. I see a few options. 5w30, 10w30, 10w40 and HD30.

What exactly is HD30 oil and can that be used instead of 10w30 or 5w30?

As far as Oil Filters go, Is there really much of a difference? I can get a purculator filter at my local K-Mart for around $3. I can get FRAM at my local Wal-Mart for between $5 and $15. Is there much of a difference between a standard FRAM filter and a Preformance or “High” mileage filter?

EDIT: The HD30 oil is advertised on the bottle as being comparable to Penzoil and “Cleans” the engine componants.

Fram filters are not really the best. It isn’t gonna be catastrophic but just good practice to go with a good one. Some companies that produce junk will have a “high end” model which may be a little better but is still not really “good”. The best of the worst, if you will.

With the oil, just go with the weight recommended for the car in question.
You can find that sometimes engraved on the oil cap itself or in the owner’s manual or of course online. Looks like it is probably 5W30 weight but make sure and verify.

For oil brands, I normally use Valvoline in my cars but I am sure opinions vary.

I put a FRAM on my Impala because it felt and looked more “heavy duty” that and cuz ACE Hardware only had 1 and i needed 3 filters. I just use Generic oil. the last oil change was all “ACE” branded oil. I have to put 10w40 in the impala (Cap and manual calls for 10w30) because if i put in 10w30 it burns the oil and i have to add a quart ever few months.

I always had the mindset that “If it fits it works” or “Gas is gas” or “oil is oil”
