WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON 15,000 OIL CHANGES. I TRY TO DO AS MUCH OF MY OWN WORK AS I CAN SINCE I WAS PAWNED OFF BY MY GOOD MECHANIC TO ONE OF HIS EMPLOYEES. I’M 70 TEARS OLD. IT’S NOT TOO BAD GETTING UNDER THE VEHICLE ……..IT’S GETTING OUT FROM UNDER THAT’S DIFFICULT. SO I GRADUALLY SWITCHED FROM “MOBILE 1” …. 5,000 MILES TO 7,500 MILES TO 15,000 MILES. I WOULD NEVER GO MORE THAN 1K MILES WITHOUT CHECKING UNDER THE HOOD!!! BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT 15K OIL? AND WHAT ABOUT THE FILTER. I CAN’T FIND ANYTHING ABOUT IT’S CHANGE OUT TIME.

      THANKS

God has blessed me with good health. I’m 68, soon to be 69, and I change my own oil as well as doing anything else any of my vehicles might need. My opinion is that if you are having trouble getting up from the floor or creeper and it is not due to some disablement, then you need to be doing more of it.

Synthetic oil is way oversold. It is an improvement with some better properties but at 15000 miles it will be very happy to sludge up your engine.

Yes, you can do this. I have 2 cars I can.
But!! It depends on 2 factors:
          1. engine quality. We know nothing on that. Say, MB has oil changes done at 60 000 km. High end models – more than that, and only dealer has drain plug key. But if engine burns or takes oil – NO WAY.
          2. oil quality. The ONLY oil I can trust this is Amsoil. You have enough $$ to spend $80 or so on oil change?

Also, you MUST flush engine with every oil change, to move sludge out.

More than anything, a 15000 oil change interval depends on oil consumption. If you’re adding a quart or so every 2000 or 3000 miles, then you’re doing a “flying oil change”. But if you’re adding little oil in 150000 miles, then you get sludge, dirt, and wear.
