Eric talks a little bit about choosing oil in this video:

Looks like he is using Supertech (Walmart) oil and filter.
I personally like the cheap stuff too, but others will likely weigh in with different opinions.
March 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #450992i use manufacture filter and oil because its what came with the car so why mess with it and i stay away from like supertech and part store brand oils. yes it will lubricate but u and i both know the marketing tools get the cheapest do the cheapest to get max profit. there in lies the point between cheaps oil.i also say if you don’t go for manufacture use these guidelines if its Japanese Toyota Hondas or gm use quaker state for some reason they love that oil its its ford use valvoline, mobil. if its Hyundai or Kia those love valvoline, ALSO TO STAY AWAY FROM HALVOLINE it burns like water in many engines that don’t usually burn oil. as far as a filter some people say frams terible but ive been using fram for 18 yrs and i know people who have used them since the beging fram which is owned by honneywell
March 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #450993This is the best site to use to research oil and filters –

There are some extremely intelligent people on that site.
March 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #450994+1 On dreamers post. It will hold more information then we could ever write out for you. But honestly, Stay away from oils that you buy in convient stores. Stay away from Fram as well. My advice is Go to Wal-Mart and get a 5Qt jug of a decent oil and use
March 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #450995If you have a Honda, go OEM. Surprisingly the OEM is cheaper then a lot of Walmart filters, and high quality. Plus they will give you a new metal crush washer. I talked them into giving me an oil sticker too.

April 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #450997I’ve been using the orange Fram filters all my life, and in my own cars, I use Pennzoil Ultra-clean synthetic in a 5w30, which I change every 5000 miles.
I’ll use the store brand oil if I buy a used car that has lots of sludge in the engine to help me clear the sludge out, then I’ll run a higher quality oil in it, and I tend to run synthetic in all my cars since I’m very lazy when it comes to working on my own vehicles.
May 3, 2012 at 11:00 am #450998The best oil to use is Mobil 1 full synthetic, but its best to use Mobil 1 from when the vehicle is new, its not recommended using full synthetic after using regular oil. Or, the Royal Purple Oil and filters are really good quality, but they are also really expensive. As for filters, stay away from “house brands”. Usually OEM filters, Fram, Puralator, Wix are all good and I think they are all made by the same company with different names. and use the type and viscosity of oil your car recommends, if it say 5w20 use 5w20, if it says 10w20 use it.
May 3, 2012 at 11:00 am #450999I use whatever is cheapest and name brand, in my car I use synthetic since I bought it new and started it that way with the 1st change. My van runs the cheapest name brand I could find (dodge). I am using Quaker State now (keep on wanting to say Quaker Steak, guess I want some wings), and my 3800 seems to love it, so I will keep with it. My GF honda has Quaker state in it now and its running like a dream (after I fixed the idle issue).
Filters, everyone tells me to not use Fram, but I have used them now for 19 years an no issues.. I use AC Delco a lot though on my GM’s. I figure the 25 cents more is worth it.. I also like WIX filters too… I also agree, walmart is your friend..
For reference, I got an Alero up to 146,000 on fram filters and cheap regular oil (quaker state, pennzoil, etc.) when I was a service tech. I think it all comes down to regular oil and filter changes. Any filter will go to crap if you don’t change it.
May 18, 2012 at 11:00 am #451000this website has tested some brands of oil, check it out http://pqiamerica.com
May 18, 2012 at 11:00 am #451001These newer engines, run the recomended grade oil that is used in the certain engines.Cam will seize up in the passenger side head of a Ford 4.6 if the wrong grade oil is used and this a very common problem with this engine. The 5.7 hemi in the 300Cs,Magnums and Chargers have a MDS system and 5w 20 is only used. Will not work right and gum the acuators up when the wrong grade oil.Chrysler put out a TSB on this few years ago.
