      Hello,

My father has a 2004 Toyota LandCruiser Prado (LandCruiser 120), 3.0L Diesel, automatic transmission. It has 100k miles, and it had an overhaul at 75k miles.

Somehow my father has noticed that the oil level drops about 1 quarter every 700 miles, and the coolant too. I doesn’t smoke, no visible leaks. I had it checked for that at the dealer and compression if great, no leaks with their special machines, etc. And the coolant doesn’t look oily.

They told me they have no idea of what could be causing this. Don’t know if could be some oil seals.

      I appreciate any suggestions.

      Thank you.

a diesel should not need an over haul at 75k
they are made to go 200-300k then maybe an over haul.
with that said.oil and coolant are going somewhere.
You could do a block test.a coolant pressure test.
when the over haul was done did the heads get redone?
        Was any machining done?

I know it didnt needed the overhaul, but its my fathers car abd he got it done, new heads and everything, and the block machined. They did all the tests at the dealers and said that everything was great.

I’m starting to think that my father isnt measuring the oil properly, but he adds oil from time to time and it mantains the level, so it must be going somewhere.

Do you have documentation stating that they did the above tests? Does it show the results?

It would not hurt to do those yourself even if it is just for a piece of mind.

Well, i got the bill, thats for sure. I’ll contact them to see if i can have the results and share them here.

As for doing the tests myself, i dont have tools and i dont have the car with me at the moment.

I’ll try to do some measurements myself and share them.

              Thank you.

Are you running synthetic oil? If so switch to regular oil and recheck for the problem.

It’s using regular oil. I’ll change the oil and write down the level every 1000km to measure it correctly. That way I’ll see if it goes gradually.

                  Thank you!

Hi, further testing resulted in getting the turbo checked, and the intake had oil on it, as well as the intake manifold (that’s what I understood) and the inter-cooler. So maybe the seals are bad, but ill get it fixed in a few weeks.

Also, just another question, a few days ago, a relative used the car with the 4wd engaged, and apparently he was speeding, resulting in the transmission fluid getting too hot and having to stop the car for a while. Is that normal?

                    Thanks

Turbos can be a source of oil consumption if the shaft seals go bad which is quite common. If the turbo wasn’t rebuilt at the same time as the engine this could very well be the issue. Keep us posted on that.

As for the 4WD you should not run 4WD at speed on dry pavement as it will overheat the transmission and possibly damage the differential. Not to mention it will eat up the front tires pretty good.

The shaft seals where bad, and so was the shaft, so we’re fixing that right now. With the turbo rebuilt, ill keep track of the oil consumption more often, but I hope that will be all

This time we’ll be careful with it and let it cool down properly.

As for the 4WD high temp, it was on gravel and muddy mountain roads, so i think thats the point. The thing was that the used it at high speeds i believe.

Thank you so much, You’ve been very helpful.

Turbo cool down is important. When you’re done with your trip it’s recommended that you let it idle for a few min before shutting it down. The reason for this is the oil that lubricates the shaft will ‘cook’ and clog up the area near the shaft. Once this happens it will not allow new lubrication to enter the area and overheat the shaft and the seals. Once this happens the turbo will begin to consume oil and fail.

As for the 4WD temp you might consider changing the fluid as well as the transmission fluid and filter if there is one. It sounds like this truck gets some use so be sure to stay up on it’s maintenance.

Yes, I changed the transmission fluid and filter a few months back. I think it was just that they used it in 4WD with high speeds.

Thank you for all the info, keep up the good work!
