Apologies if this has been suggested.

But I have just seen that there is a few different companies that offer engine oil analysis. looking at the report it shows the parts per million of metals, fuel from blow by, coolant etc in the oil and you can compare this against averages and see if any values are excessive and this will indicate if particular components are wearing.

      just a thought 🙂

I think im going to get it done for curiosity

This is a topic that’s often discussed on the forum. I have little to no experience with it though. Should that change, I’d be happy to make a video about it.

I use Blackstone Labs, as it is what Auto Manufacturers I’ve worked with use to determine if a warranty engine/trans issue should be covered. We send out oils from failed units to determine if the correct oil was in the unit when it failed. That way, we know if the customer has used something that voids the warranty (which they usually don’t).

I occasionally send in oil samples from my summer/fun car because the bearings have 240k on them and I beat the hell out of it all the time, and want to keep tabs on if they are starting to degrade.

I’ve known a few people who have dabbled with oil analysis for their vehicles, and they invariably get it wrong. They will look at the results of one report, change to a different brand of oil, get another analysis done, and compare the two. This doesn’t yield any useful information.

Oil analysis reports only have value when you stick with the same brand and formulation of oil and compare the results of several successive tests. This will show if any trends are developing within the machine. Trends can only be deduced from the test results by establishing a consistent baseline of the test conditions over several tests.

Jumping around and changing the conditions of every test tells you nothing, and the money spent on testing is wasted.
