Yesterday I walked by my 2002 Pontiac Montana and the electric door locks just took it upon themselves to lock the van. It was sitting in the driveway, windows up, key not in ignition, key fob in the house, and I heard the distinctive click that electric door locks make when activated.I could NOT believe it, but ALL doors were locked. Can anyone tell me WHY this might have happened?
      I SURE would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance, Ron :

I usually have change and a pocket knife as well as the key ring in my pocket. If the key fob inadvertently unlocks my car and no door is opened, after a few minutes the computer commands the doors to lock. I think this is a nice feature.

I had an issue with my Accord locking, and sometimes unlocking the power door locks for no obvious reason. Turned out to be a bad actuator in the drivers side front door, and it was triggering the rest of the locks.

On most vehicles (if not all), the door lock switch or whatever is going to lock all doors. It wouldn’t make sense to leave even ONE entry unlocked.

Look in your owner’s manual and see how the door locks work. Might be like barneyb said.
“prgramming” the PDL behavior varies from car to car and could include anything from pulling a particular fuse to holding down a fob button while opening and closing a door to standing in front of the car while patting your head and rubbing your belly ior whatever engineers thought of.

On a side note – any time the keys are inside the car, I always leave a window a bit down for that very reason. Car locking systems are weird. Security systems typically keep more owners than thieves out of the car.

The Key fob or the lock switch could be malfunctioning and sending a signal to lock the doors. I had a key fob that the button malfunctioned and was stuck closed so every time I was in range the locks would lock and unlock uncontrollably.

Or there may be someone in your family trying to mess with you by pushing the button when you’re next to the vehicle. 😉

It might be normal operation. Check your owners manual to see if there’s a feature that automatically locks the doors if the vehicle is left unattended for a prescribed length of time.
